Hi Paul.
I recently found your channel on YouTube, and have been following it with some interest. I would like to recount a story my late mother told me that may add to your collection of strange occurrences in the area.
We originally lived in Ravensthorpe, near Dewsbury in West Yorkshire, but in the mid 1960's my mother accepted a job in the Bursar's Department at Hunmanby Hall Girls School. My mother, my Grandmother, and myself, (my father and mother had divorced), moved to a rented flat in Rutland Street, Filey.
I have fond memories of living in Filey, and visiting Filey Brigg, Primrose Valley, Reighton Gap, and playing on the beach at the Coble Landings, etc, etc. I even remember an illicit visit to Hunmanby Hall and swimming in the open-air pool during the holidays when the school was closed.
I have no idea of the exact date of this event, but it would have been sometime in 1967, as I was sick with scarlet fever. My mother was working late at the school, and I was feeling miserable and desperate for her to get home.
It was dark early in the evening, and when she finally got home I was delighted to see her. I was even more excited when she came into my bedroom, quite animated, and with a story that she was desperate to relate. My grandma and I were intrigued as she recounted her experience.
She had left the School and had driven onto Filey Road out of Hunmanby village, to join the A165 Moor Road north to Filey at Primrose Valley. As she was checking for traffic to her right, she noticed towards the Bempton/Flamborough Head direction, two very bright orange lights/spheres/orbs some distance away. Intrigued, and wanting to get a better view, she turned right and drove through Reighton towards Buckden and Bempton.
She stopped on the Flamborough Road outside Bempton and watched the 'lights' for a good 20 minutes before they descended and appeared to enter the sea about a mile off shore. She then retraced her tracks and headed home to Filey, wondering what it was she had seen.
At the time I vividly remember her recounting the story, and it was only as I got older, I managed to piece together her movements, on questioning her I discovered it was around the end of January 1967.
For many years afterwards, she would occasionally mention it, wondering what she had witnessed that night. It was only after watching your channel that I thought it might be of interest to you as part of the occurrences in the area.
After leaving school, I joined the Royal Air Force and spent 34 years as a Weapons Engineer, the last 26 of those as a Bomb Disposal Officer, but, sadly, never experienced the excitement of witnessing any "High Strangeness" personally.
Good Luck with your Channel, I shall continue to watch with avid interest.
Regards,
Fergus
