Hi Paul,
I'm new to your youtube channel - love it!
Location - Roman Camp NT woodland, west Runton, Norfolk
Date- 27 12 25
Time 23.30- 03.00
Conditions - clear, dry night. Light wind. Visibility approx 10%
A friend and I regularly wild camp (hammock and tarp) at this location. We're both ex military and quite frankly had had enough of Christmas, so had gone for a 'swing'. Usual night, involving a small fire, bit of bacon etc. We've called it a night at about 22.00 and had gone to sleep.
Approx 23.30 I heard what I can only describe as a pig grunting quite closely. I wasn't overly concerned, I'm used to animal noises at night, but haven't heard anything like this before.
Over the next hour or so, the grunting came from all around and various distances. There were no associated animal noises (twigs breaking, undergrowth moving etc). I have no idea why, but I feel it was one animal, not a number in different locations.
At approx 02.00 my tarp (3.5m2) was shoved in on my right side. It wasn't violently done, but quite forcibly and pushed in approx 50 cm.
There was no noise.
Later, something brushed up against my hammock, again forcibly but not violently and ran along the length of the hammock, so basically walked under my tarp.
No noise again.
This left me with an irrational fear.
I can't really explain the feeling. I have never felt this way before.
I have served in Iraq and Bosnia and I've been scared, but this was something different.
At first light, whilst packing up, there were no tracks, or visible signs of animals.
Whilst I'm no expert on animals, I have a basic knowledge of indigenous creatures and I'm baffled.
At no point did I see anything, and my friend only heard the grunting..... And slept like a baby!
All the best
Bendy
Paul: Thank you very much for this vivid description. And your couple of photos help to set the scene.
Best wishes Paul
