March 2021. Yorkshire Wolds

Hi Paul

My name is Nick. I’ve been metal detecting the Yorkshire Wolds for quite a few years in areas with Roman and Celtic activity.

One day in March 2021, it was clear blue sky with no wind, clouds or other meteorological activity. At the time I was accompanied by my partner who also was metal detecting.

Walking towards a certain area in the field I found a small broken silver denarius coin. Well worn. Upon passing it over to show my partner, while she was holding it, a large distorted figure of a humanoid shape ran past her from behind, diagonally. It could quite easily be seen as some form of dust devil, but in this instance it was a human shape running. I remember it very vividly. A cross between a shadow and a distortion / heat haze.

The first thing we experienced was an intense feeling of trespass and disturbing someone. Although we do have permission from the farmer, I’ve not shared my experience with many for fear of ridicule. I have returned to the field sporadically over the years and still had the same intense sick feeling in my stomach. On one occasion I nearly passed out with nausea as the electric feeling inside was so intense. Literally seconds after this feeling I walked over another silver denarius this time from Hadrian which suggests a long time period of occupation. The feeling I had burning in my neck was I was being watched or followed.

I took a friend detecting in the same area and explained our experience some years before and was dismissed by him. Shortly after this we also experienced very strange phenomena of loud roaring sounds with no wind, planes or birds etc. He rarely if at all goes to that field and at the time he looked petrified. I saw him last year and he recounted the incident moment for moment.

The strangest part is that I spoke to a family friend whose father worked on the local farms claimed he saw figures walking diagonally across the road on a summers night. This was in the 1950s after the war. Apparently he spoke little of it as he was disturbed. The bit that made my heart pound was the fact he explained exactly the location where it was and made me realise maybe me and my partner HAD actually seen something.

On Boxing Day 2024 we went for a late night walk to the location which my friend had mentioned. Whilst there, our LED torch began behaving erratically and a hot atmosphere surrounded us. We quickly turned around and returned absolutely spooked.

I decided to do some research and discovered that both points where we had these experiences lined up with well known beacon sites and also an almost perfect “ley line” that follows the A15 all the way to the east coast, intercepting various burial grounds across the Wolds such as Arras hill, and I’m talking within 50 meters over a ley line that appears to be nearly 100 miles long.

I’m quite alarmed. I eventually invited a friend to the site upon which I had these experiences and she performed a Druid ritual asking for peace to the site, I was a little taken back by this but she said there was definitely a presence of trauma and someone wanting to be heard. Since she performed the ceremony I’ve not experienced the same sick feelings in my gut since. Whether this is pseudo science, the power of suggestive thought or overactive thinking, I can’t answer. All I know is I have four individual accounts in two areas from people who don’t know each other.

My friend said to me we may have stumbled on a time slip or passive / unintelligent haunting.

Previously I worked as an assistant sexton and in all my time I’d never experienced a ghost, or presence.
