Strange noise in a lonely wood in Hessle, Hull, Yorkshire
Hello Paul
Back in the late eighties, I was a poacher.
Paul - I love a report that begins like this...
I would go out onto the farmers' land which was located behind my house, which is along Boothferry Road.
Behind us was a ten foot, then, shallow woods, then the farmers land, I would slip out as it got dark through the woods onto the fields. I did it most nights on my own; if it was a really clear night, dry, perfect conditions, I would hop across the fields into the small woods.
On one particular occasion, it was really quiet, I remember, I didn’t know what that meant back then (as in there’s a large predator around) - no birds making any noise and I mean DEAD quiet.
I started going back home and I crossed a couple of fields with no concerns. The last woods I had to go through to get home, there was no noise until and I heard the snap of a biggish twig, or branch - you get an idea with the sound of the noise it makes
Every hair on my neck stood up. I turned and looked and I aimed the air rifle (not that it would have made a difference lol). I walked backwards: something was there. It wasn’t a person.
It's hard to explain the feelings going through my body: it was watching me, whatever it was. None of the birds was making a noise.
Needless to say, it was the last time I went out at night after that night. I walked my dogs up there daytime of course. On one occasion an old couple started talking to me, I relayed the story, they live not far from the woods and mentioned they saw a big black cat in their garden and the postman saw it too.
My experience stopped me ever going on any woodland fields at night, this took place the back of Boothferry Road, Hessle. The land runs up Boothferry Hill heading near the Humber Bridge. The farm land goes to Swanland village - it's vast....
Thanks, Steve
