Bright light in the sky
Hi Paul.
This is the second report from me. Although it is over 25yrs between experiences.
This year (2025) I was on the Isle of Wight in June for the music festival. I’m originally from the Island and after the festival stayed a few extra days after the weekend.
On the Monday (23rd June) we stayed at the Buddle Inn in Niton. It’s at the most southerly point on the island. The pub itself is supposed to be haunted but we didn’t witness anything.
I’ve always loved stargazing and on that side of the island it is a great place for dark skies. You can see the Milky Way on a dark night.
As it was a clear night after dinner we walked from the pub towards the coast. It’s a short walk down a road then onto a short private road which passes through a wooded area. Once through a short wooded area the road continues downhill and the area becomes fields and hedgerows. About 800 meters from here is the cliff edge and St Catherine’s lighthouse. This is a large lighthouse with interesting history.
It was around 1030pm and it was getting dark.
As we cleared the wooded area I looked at the lighthouse and it was signalling as normal. Almost immediately I saw a bright white light above it. It was probably about 15ft above. Within seconds it moved in an arc to the right and down and then up and out to sea at very high speed and disappeared. The nearest ship was about 3miles away.
I immediately said to my girlfriend, "Did you see that?" To my frustration she didn’t see it, as she was looking at the ground trying to avoid walking in potholes.
I strongly feel it went because of us, and I cannot workout if it disappeared because of the speed or the light went out. We then walked to the lighthouse looked all around and over the cliff. I couldn’t see anyone around.
I feel whatever I saw was either a military type of drone or something unexplained. If it was a military drone, why would it be hovering above a lighthouse in the dark?
For reference, I've owned a number of aerial photography drones and in my work I've seen quite a few, and they don’t move like that. I know racing drones can move quickly, but they’re normally very small and it doesn’t make sense how bright the light was. I didn’t hear anything as normally drones can be quite noisy. Although at 800 metres would I have heard one?
I have been back since but didn’t see anything. I’ll be hopefully returning in the near future.
Regards
Lee
