Hi Paul,
My name is Colin, 52 years of age and was a Prison Officer at the time of my sighting in early 2021.
I had just finished an early shift at work and was travelling home from Durham Prison to Chester Le Street along the A167. The time was around 1300 hrs and the weather was sunny, very windy with thin cloud level.
After passing the Red Lion pub and the petrol station the road bears right and in the distance you can see a large black office tower located in Washington. I was surprised to see in the sky to the right of the tower high in the fast moving thin clouds a huge W shape, it was very dark black in colour, much blacker than the office tower and a lot bigger even though it seemed to be a similar distance away.
The shape and size of the object made me think of a huge balloon but seeing how fast the clouds were passing and the tops of the trees bending I could tell this stationary W shape was something else.
This is the part I cannot work out in my head because when I get to the roundabout I turn left to go home and almost immediately the huge black W object totally left my mind, like a "nothing to see here" feeling. A few minutes later I saw it again in the sky from a different vantage point and had the same dismissive feeling. I went home and gave it no thought for about a month when my mind was jogged after driving home from work on the same shift and very similar weather. I saw the office tower block in the distance and my experience flooded back.
I cannot work out why I did not drive in the direction of the object to investigate or even think about taking a photo. It has made me think about the possibility of other things all of us may have seen and not registered because of outside forces manipulating our thoughts and minds.
I have told a few people about my experience but nothing to any other sources.
Love what you do, thank you.
Colin H
Paul: Thanks for reporting this unusual object and your kind remarks. Your experience of having it effectively blanked out is very interesting.
